READ THIS So, be sure to investigate your pricing and figure out your ROI to see if the benefits really out-weigh the expense. With this in mind and as the price of heating fuel soars, here are a few common things you can do in your own home to help to ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible: Proper Insulation Here are a few things that every homeowner can look at:
Windows: Windows can be a major source of heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Properly selected and installed windows can help minimize your home's heating and cooling costs. Install storm windows on single-paned windows. Sealing and weather stripping your doors and windows will also prevent heat from escaping this winter. Sill Plate: When a home is built there is a layer of insulation material place between the framing and the foundation. Over time this might break down. You can prevent air leaks in this area by simply using a spray foam insulation along the sill plate in your basement. Vents: Be sure to select air vents that include a flap to seal the cold weather from sneaking in during the winter months. Thermostats: Use a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature when you are not home and at night. .......................................................................................... Other General Tips: Lower the temperature on your water heater. It should be set at "warm," so that a thermometer held under running water reads no more than 120 degrees. Only heat or cool the rooms you need - close vents and doors of unused rooms. Switch to cold water when washing laundry, and select energy-efficient washing machines (look for the Energy Star symbol). Approximately 15 percent of an average home energy bill goes to heating water. To save hot water, take five-minute showers instead of baths. Do only full loads when using the washing machine or dishwasher. Insulate your water tank. Open the window shades on the south, east and west windows during the winter to let the sun provide additional heat naturally for your home.
