Energy Cost and How To Save Long Term

What can we do to save on energy cost?

Our company takes a different approach than many mechanical contractors may take. Many think just changing your boiler or furnace will do the trick. Yes, it will help but for long term solutions this is what we recommend first.

The building envelope is far more important than any mechanical equipment change you could do to your home or business. Windows, doors and insulation are first on our list of changes that should take place. This is an investment in ev- eryone’s future, by cutting consumption thus also reducing emissions which is huge problem in northeast.

How do we know what items are most important?

There are many resources; many which are free of charge. I personally recom- mend contacting your local trusted building or mechanical contractor who can steer you into the right direction. Most changes are very simple and create a trusted relationship with goals.

The State also has programs which will require a formal energy audit. The state also has loan programs but again will cost money as they require deep paper trail with formal energy audits. I believe local, trusted sources are the best alternative, as many state energy auditors have limited experience. Most people don’t know this, but loan programs for energy conservation items are readily available at Biddeford Savings Bank with much more competitive interest rates than state offers with same criteria to meet for loan underwriting.

Second item on list is upgrades to current heating and hot water systems in home or business. Again, there are many selections which can be tailored to the needs of each individual. Some are as simple as controls, while some are more involved, including replacement of entire heating systems.

Keep it local. Contact your trusted community contractors and bank and everyone will benefit.
